I heard about Amanda Petrusich's book on an NPR podcast and had to have it. My anticipation was not in vain. The author does a fine job of taking the reader on a musical journey into the 78 rpm world.We meet several high profile collectors, some with probably affected quirks for the author's benefit. The different methods of collecting aren't unexpected but the reasons are singular to each collector. My favorite was the story of the Black Patti find.The book does lean maybe a little too heavily toward pre-war blues, which is the high money end of the 78 collecting spectrum. I would like to have seen equal emphasis on other genres, including the scoffed at Big Bands.Some readers appear put off by the section on diving near the Paramount plant in search of masters thrown into the river. I found this to be a refreshing interlude, if somewhat silly.The book ends too soon. It could have easily been doubled. I will read this book again and again.
